Why buy a solar attic fan?
Top reasons to buy a solar attic fan
Reduces A/C workload:
An unventilated attic can reach temperatures of 150°F or more in the summer, and this trapped heat radiates into your home. A solar attic fan expels this superheated air, so your air conditioner runs less and at a lower intensity.
Keeps your living space cooler:
By reducing heat transfer from the attic, a solar fan can noticeably lower the temperature in your living areas, especially in the upstairs rooms.
Eliminates operating costs:
Since the fan is powered entirely by the sun, it costs nothing to operate. It runs most during the hottest, sunniest times of the day when it’s needed most, without adding to your electricity bill.
Qualifies for tax incentives:
Solar attic fans may qualify for federal tax credits, helping to offset the initial purchase and installation costs.
Prevents mold and mildew:
In humid climates, moisture can get trapped in the attic and lead to mold and mildew growth. By continuously circulating air, a solar fan reduces humidity and keeps the attic dry.
Extends roof life:
Excessive heat and moisture can damage roofing materials, such as warping wood and cracking shingles. Proper attic ventilation extends the lifespan of your roof by protecting it from premature deterioration.
Combats ice dams in winter:
During colder months, ventilation prevents warm, moist air from building up in the attic, which can melt snow on the roof and lead to ice dams. These dams can damage your roof by allowing water to seep under shingles.
Reduces carbon footprint:
Using renewable solar energy is an environmentally friendly choice that lowers your home’s energy consumption and carbon emissions.
Quiet operation:
Most modern solar fans use brushless DC motors, which are highly efficient and operate with a whisper-quiet sound.
Simple installation:
With no electrical wiring needed, solar attic fans are often easier to install than electric models. Many can be mounted on the roof over an existing vent.

As of 2022, solar attic fans qualify for the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit, which covers 30% of the cost of the solar panels and associated installation costs.
How do I get my tax credit?
To claim the credit, file IRS Form 5695, Residential Clean Energy Credit, with your federal tax return for the year the fan was installed. Be sure to keep receipts and the manufacturer’s certification statement for your records.
